Un bébé naît et meurt dans un couvent. Le docteur Martha Livingston est chargée d'élucider le cas. Mais elle se heurtera bientôt au mutisme des soeurs, spécialement la Mère Supérieure du couvent qui y voit une manifestation divine et inexpliquée...

A filmed play. Thanks to Sven Nykvyst's dark, somber cinematography and Norman Jewison's attention to details, it has its moments, if one forgets all the ambitions of a confused screenplay. the actresses are the ting; but Jane Fonda is somewhat too emphatic as the psychiatrist (one wants to ask her : "why don't you relax ?" she has a great scene with her senile mother, though. Meg Tilly does what she can as the (impossible to play) title character; and Anne Bancroft steals the show as theapparently cold and trouble mother superior a great performance.
