Not many people in Europe have seen thisisodly affecting russian moovie, and it's a pity. Though not a masterpiece, it's a bitter, moving story of growing up during hard times. The young hero discovers the cruelty of an adult world,and learns the rules of its game. A story which is poetic and grimly realistic at the same time. The film is masterfully shot (in black and white and color) by Youri Klimenko, and the camera is like one of the leading characters. It's performed by a great cast, including Ludmila Savelieva in the small, moving role of an aging actress who lives with her memories. And it has a definite visual style, a sense of seasons, of time passing, a flowing narrative line which must be seen.
